Sol Campbell hopes to help disadvantaged people in London mayoral bid

Campbell hopes to help disadvantaged people

Former England and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has insisted that he hasn't forgotten his roots and wants to help disadvantaged people as he bids to become London mayor.

The 40-year-old, who is seeking approval to become the Conservative candidate for the mayoral elections, grew up in Plaistow before becoming a professional footballer.

Campbell is believed to have earned around £100,000 a week at the peak of his career, but the retired sportsman is confident that he can relate to those less fortunate.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Campbell said: "I'm from the street, I haven't forgotten. I genuinely want to give opportunities to people who have not got anything. I've been there. My talent got me out but what if I didn't have it?"

The ex-defender also revealed that he rarely rides on the London Underground and has never rented a 'Boris Bike' in the city, but has taken the bus on occasion.
