Former British number one tennis star Elena Baltacha has announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer of the liver.

The 30-year-old, who retired from tennis in November last year, has revealed that she is hopeful of winning her battle against the illness.

Baltacha told the LTA website: "I have recently been diagnosed with cancer of the liver. I'm currently undergoing treatment and fighting this illness with everything I have."

The statement added: "Elena and her husband Nino would like to thank everyone for their continued support."

During Baltacha's playing career, she won 11 ITF titles and reached the third round of the Australian Open twice in 2005 and 2010, as well as the third round of Wimbledon in 2002.

Baltacha also represented Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
