Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson has reportedly been taken to hospital while on holiday in Tenerife.

The 79-year-old, who will turn 80 in March, suffered a "dizzy spell" two days ago which saw him admitted to hospital, where he currently remains.

Atkinson spent five years in charge at Old Trafford immediately prior to Sir Alex Ferguson's appointment, leading the club to FA Cup glory in 1983 and 1985.

The veteran manager also won the League Cup with both Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa, the latter of whom he was in charge of between 1991 and 1994.

Atkinson enjoyed a well-travelled career in management, taking charge of nine different clubs including West Bromwich Albion and Wednesday on two separate occasions.

Atletico Madrid are also among his former employers, while his most recent club was Nottingham Forest.
