Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been remanded in custody after appearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control charges.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January following accusations from a woman and allegations surrounding videos and images which emerged online.

Greenwood has been suspended by Man United since the allegations were made, and the Englishman was charged on Monday with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm," said the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West Janet Potter.

"All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West's complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.

"The defendant's first court appearance will take place on Monday 17 October at Greater Manchester magistrates' court.

"The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings."

Wearing a grey hooded Nike jumper and grey jogging bottoms and flanked by two dock officers, Greenwood appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

His family and members of the press watched on in a full public gallery in the small courtroom.

The attempted rape is alleged to have taken place in October 2021, and the controlling and coercive behaviour relates to a period between November 2018 and October 2022, where he is alleged to have made threatening and derogatory comments towards the complainant, as well as accessing and monitoring her social media accounts.

Meanwhile, the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.

The forward has been on bail since his arrest but he was re-arrested in Trafford on Saturday for an alleged breach of the conditions.

Greenwood will now be remanded until his next court appearance at Minshull Street Crown Court on November 21.
