Sky Sports confirms that pundit Jamie Carragher will be suspended for the rest of the season after he was filmed spitting at a Manchester United fan.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher will not return to his punditry role at Sky Sports for the rest of the season.

The 40-year-old, who has been a regular face on the channel since 2013, was suspended by the broadcaster earlier this week for spitting at a Manchester United fan and the supporter's 14-year-old daughter.

Carragher has since apologised for his actions, which were caught on video by the fan who filmed the incident while driving his car.

After the United supporter goaded the ex-Liverpool defender over the Merseyside outfit's 2-1 defeat to United at Old Trafford on Saturday, Carragher rolled down the window of his Range Rover and spat in the man's direction, inadvertently catching the fan's teenage daughter with his spittle.

The family of the young girl have urged Sky not to sack the football pundit, and now the broadcaster has confirmed that Carragher's suspension has been extended until the end of the season.

A final decision has not been made regarding the retired footballer's future at Sky, but a review will take place prior to the 2018-19 campaign.

A statement read: "Following an internal review, Sky has suspended Jamie Carragher for the remainder of the football season. Jamie has taken full responsibility for what has happened and we will ensure he gets the help he needs to guarantee something like this never happens again.

"Before the start of the next season we will sit down with Jamie to discuss whether he is ready to return to his role."

Carragher did three televised interviews in the aftermath of the incident to apologise for his behaviour.
