Former NFL defensive back Darren Sharper has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Sharper was arrested on Friday before being released on $200,000 (£121,750) bail later that night, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The 38-year-old, who will appear in court on February 14, is being investigated by LAPD for two separate sexual assaults that are alleged to have taken place in West Los Angeles in October and earlier this month.

A third allegation is also being investigated by the New Orleans Police Department, who say that Sharper was accused of sexual assault on September 24.

The five-time Pro Bowler retired from the sport in 2010 and has since been working for the NFL Network as an analyst. However, he has now been suspended without pay from that role for an indefinite period of time.

"Darren has been suspended without pay until further notice, effective immediately," a spokesman for NFL Network told The AP.

Sharper featured for the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints during a 14-year career, which saw him win one Super Bowl title and be named in the NFL's 2000's All-Decade Team.
