Floyd Mayweather lucky in casino, wins video poker jackpot

Floyd Mayweather manages to win a $100k video poker jackpot at a Las Vegas casino.

Floyd "Money" Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather has been closely connected to money for most of his professional career. The word "Money" has even been established as his nickname in boxing and media.

Money is closely tied to his public image, with it playing a very important role in his 2015 and 2017 fights against Manny Pacquiao and Connor McGregor. The money Mayweather made for these two fights (reportedly over half a billion dollars in total) was a strong part of the hype generated over them.

Recently, Mayweather has been in the news for something else, although money is still involved in the story. The "Pretty Boy", as Mayweather was known before switching to "Money", managed to win a $100k video poker jackpot at a Las Vegas casino. Although this is not that much money for a boxer who made $300m for his last boxing match, it's a very nice score for a regular casino player.

Started with $20k, walked away with over $100k
Mayweather shared the good news with his followers using an Instagram story that you can now watch on TMZ.com. The video clearly displays a $101,250.00 jackpot he secured thanks to a royal flush he managed to get on a "Ten Play Draw Poker", in which he played 10 hands at once.

Mayweather got a great starting combination, with A, K, 10 and J of clubs. He exchanged one card and needed to get Q of clubs to hit the best possible combination – the royal flush. In each of the 10 hands, he had approximately 2.12% chance to hit the royal flush, as the odds of hitting the Q of clubs were one in 47. However, as Mayweather was playing 10 hands at once, he had a much higher chance to hit the royal flush on at least one of the hands.

And that's exactly what he managed to do, bringing him $100,000, with other nine hands cashing in smaller winning combinations for $1,250. The total win of $101,250 is a very nice payout for a total bet of $250 (10 hands, $25 each).

Is luck involved?
Mayweather generally attributes everything he's achieved to his hard work and dedication. However, this particular instance is a bit different. If you know something about the world of gambling, you are definitely aware of the fact that luck is a major component of gambling, at least on a short-term basis.

The casino generally has a statistical advantage, which means it makes money in the long term and the player needs luck to overcome the odds which are stacked against him or her. The casino's advantage is known as house edge or house advantage.

In games like slots or roulette, the house edge is fixed and the player can't do anything to change it. However, video poker is slightly different. A good video poker strategy is needed to reach the declared maximum theoretical return. That means the player has to make good decisions, so it wasn't all luck for Mayweather. Maybe it's part of the reason why he preferred to play video poker over slots, for example.

What's interesting is the fact that some video poker variants allow players to surpass a 100% return and make playing the game actually beneficial for them. That being said, it's basically impossible to find these games anywhere, not to mention in the huge gaming venues in Las Vegas.

It's fair to say that Mayweather, a man who made over $3.5m per minute of his fight with McGregor, most likely doesn't care that much about the casino's statistical advantage and just wants to have fun, but it doesn't hurt to choose the best game to play.
