England match attracts bigger TV share than Royal Wedding

World Cup TV share pips Royal Wedding

England's 6-1 victory over Panama at the World Cup finals attracted a larger television viewership share than last month's Royal Wedding.

According to figures from the BBC, the Group G match drew an 82.9% peak share of the TV audience while the Royal Wedding achieved a 70% peak share.

For comparison, the Three Lions' victory over Wales at Euro 2016 achieved 73% in the UK and 79% in Wales.

Although the England game attracted 14.1m viewers and a further 2.8m on-demand requests, it did not topple the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony's peak share of 89%.

The win over Panama has guaranteed England's place in the knockout phase of the World Cup finals.
