Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Mido mocks "bad" England

Former Egypt striker Mido jokes that England are "so bad" that not even their own fans will back them for the World Cup "for the first time since 1966".

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough forward Mido has suggested that England are "so bad" that not even their own fans will back them for the World Cup "for the first time since 1966".

The former Egypt international posted on social media during England's friendly with Nigeria on Saturday, which saw the Three Lions score twice before the break and ultimately run out 2-1 winners.

Despite an impressive first-half performance by Gareth Southgate's side, Mido was somewhat bemused with what he saw, joking that lessened expectations may actually see England win the World Cup.

The 35-year-old wrote: "One good thing about this England side that they are so bad that no-one is expecting anything from them this World Cup for the first time since 1966!! So maybe they are going to win it this time!!"

Mido's comment led to backlash from England fans on social media, with Great Britain field hockey star and Olympic gold medallist Sam Quek replying to the tweet with a clip of the player's lacklustre attempt at Soccer AM's Crossbar Challenge.

As well as Spurs and Boro, Mido also spent time in England playing for Wigan Athletic, West Ham United and Barnsley.
