Former England goalkeeper Ron Springett passes away

Former England international Ron Springett has died at the age of 80.

The Fulham-born stopper, who provided back-up to Gordon Banks in the 1966 World Cup-winning squad, passed away following a short illness.

Springett won 33 caps for the Three Lions and started each game for his country en route to the 1962 World Cup quarter-finals.

At club level, Springett began his career with Queens Park Rangers before moving to Sheffield Wednesday five years later.

His last international cap came in England's 6-1 win over Norway shortly before their success on home soil in 1966.
