Silverstone on "high alert" for British Grand Prix terrorism threat

Silverstone confirms that officials at the track are on "high alert" for terrorism attacks ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix.

Silverstone has confirmed that the circuit is on "high alert" for threats of terrorism at this weekend's British Grand Prix.

The race comes just a week after 38 people, mostly British nationals, were shot dead on a beach in Tunisia, and two days before the 10th anniversary of the 7/7 suicide bomb attacks in London.

"Because it is a major, high-level sporting event, we were already on high alert. The level of the threat in the UK is 'severe' and it has not changed," The Mirror quotes a spokesperson for the track as saying.

"We have had a risk assessment by Northamptonshire police and security is based on that assessment."

A record 350,000 fans are expected to attend over the weekend, with 140,000 forecast for the race on Sunday.
