Hoeness charged with tax evasion

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has been charged with tax evasion by German prosecutors.

Hoeness's lawyers have one month to respond to the charges before a court decides whether the 61-year-old will face trial.

Hoeness reported himself to the authorities in regards to a previously undeclared Swiss bank account earlier this year, with the German media stating that millions of euros have been deposited in the account for over a decade.

"We have filed the charges to the Munich state court," said Ken Heidenreich, a spokesman for Munich prosecutors. "The defence now has one month to pronounce itself."

Hoeness offered to step down as president of the German and European champions in May as the investigation intensified, but the club rejected his resignation.
