Australian weightlifter Francois Etoundi ordered to compensate headbutt victim

Australian weightlifter Francois Etoundi will pay £400 to Wales's Gareth Evans after headbutting the weightlifter in the Athletes' Village at the Commonwealth Games.

Australia weightlifter Francois Etoundi has been ordered to pay £400 in compensation to a Welsh athlete after headbutting him in the Athletes' Village at the Commonwealth Games.

The 77kg bronze medallist was arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning after assaulting Gareth Evans, who is also a weightlifter.

Etoundi, who has been stripped of his accreditation for the remainder of the Games, admitted the offence following an appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court, where a judge ordered him to pay £400 to the Wales athlete.

The incident, which left Evans with a broken nose, arose after the Welshman's girlfriend congratulated the Australian on winning his medal.
