Great Britain one point away from Ice Hockey World Championship victory

Great Britain beats Netherlands 3-2 in the Ice Hockey World Championship to move to within a point of promotion to Group 1A.

Great Britain won their fourth consecutive match at the Ice Hockey World Championship by defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in Eindhoven.

They play Lithuania tomorrow and need just a point to guarantee victory and promotion to Group 1A.

The Netherlands took the lead after 3:09 when Steve Mason finished low from the slot.

It took just 52 seconds for Great Britain to bounce back, though, as Paul Swindlehurst scored his first goal in British colours from the point.

Chris Blight gave Great Britain the lead with a backhand shot on 9:24, and Craig Peacock added the third goal on 12:13.

Netherlands goaltender Martijn Oosterwijk was immediately replaced by Ian Meierdres, who then kept Great Britain at bay with a number of saves in the second period.

Levi Houkes grabbed a goal back for the Netherlands from the rebound, but Great Britain were able to see out the final six minutes and secure victory.

Great Britain will earn a point if they are able to take the game to overtime against Lithuania tomorrow. The puck drops at 4pm GMT.
