Chris Grasscock scored a field goal to get the host nation back into the tie, but Gay managed to complete his hat-trick during before the break to leave Wales in control.

However, Scotland made an equally fast start in the second half with Gordon McIntyre and Daniel Coultas getting the Scots back on level terms.

The resurgent Scottish team continued to press and took the lead for the first time with just over 10 minutes still to play after Nick Parkes forced his way forward for a shot.

The result gives Scotland their first win in Pool A, while Wales remain bottom, having lost all three matches so far.
