Team GB hammered in hockey semi-final

Team GB lose in the hockey semi-finals after a thumping 9-2 defeat to Netherlands.

Team GB have been soundly beaten 9-2 by the Netherlands in the semi-final of the hockey tournament and will contest for bronze instead of gold.

Billy Bakker and Roderick Weusthof both scored hat-tricks on the way to Netherlands' thumping win and Britain were completely outclassed in all areas.

In a tightly contested opening to the first half it was the Netherlands who opened the scoring on nine minutes, Weusthof with his first from a penalty corner before adding his second on 15.

Ashley Jackson scored three minutes later to pull GB back into the game but from then on it was one-way traffic.

Netherlands scored twice more before half-time and went in with a comfortable 4-1 lead.

GB resisted for nearly 10 minutes in the second half before three goals in four minutes decided the result.

Another two goals were scored on 51 and 60 minutes respectively before Britain saved some face with a goal through Robert Moore five minutes from time.

That was the end of the scoring and Netherlands made the final after a thoroughly convincing 9-2 win.
