England thrash Malaysia in Commonwealths opener

Team England's men's hockey team get their Commonwealth Games off to a flying start with a 7-0 win over Malaysia on the Gold Coast.

Team England have got their Commonwealth Games campaign off to a flying start courtesy of a 7-0 win over Malaysia in their opening men's hockey match this morning.

Two goals each from Mark Gleghorne and Sam Ward helped England to the emphatic victory, with Malaysia rarely looking like posing one of the tournament favourites any problems.

England, who won bronze in Glasgow four years ago, took a 1-0 lead in the first quarter before really asserting their dominance in the second, going into half time with a 4-0 lead.

Malaysia avoided any further damage in the third quarter, but England then added three more goals in the final 15 minutes as Harry Martin, Phillip Roper and David Goodfield also ended the match on the scoresheet.

Malaysia failed to have a single shot throughout the match as they slumped to the bottom of Pool B ahead of Saturday's game against Wales.

England, meanwhile, soar into an early lead in the Pool and will face Pakistan in their next match on Sunday.
