Kate Richardson-Walsh: 'Momentum is key to England hockey success'

Kate Richardson-Walsh hopes that England's victory against Wales can prove to be the springboard to further success at the Commonwealth Games.

Team England women's hockey captain Kate Richardson-Walsh is hopeful that today's 2-0 victory over Wales can help her side to build some momentum in the Commonwealth Games.

Goals from Alex Danson and Nicola White made the difference in the opening group game at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre, as England put their 11th-place finish in the World Cup behind them.

"With tournament hockey nobody remembers what the scoreline was in the end, they just remember how many points you had on the table so I'm really happy to get the win," Richardson-Walsh said.

"Coming on the back of a disappointing World Cup, we just want to build some momentum and we know how important winning your first game is. Second half we did play some better stuff and if we can build on that I think we can be right in it."

Elsewhere, Australia beat Malaysia 4-0 to take top spot in Pool B.
