Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery has revealed that Formula 1 bosses haven't consulted them about a proposal to give teams a greater choice of tyres for race weekends.
Under the proposal, which has been revealed during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend, constructors would be able to choose any type of rubber for a given race, rather than the current system which sees the manufacturer offer up two types of tyre for the grid to use.
According to Hembery, no-one has explained why there is a need to change the rules and the Pirelli boss is worried that teams may take unsafe gambles in a bid to improve results.
He told BBC Sport: "You'd have people who maybe need to risk more taking decisions that would create a safety problem.
"You have to take into account some of the extreme conditions and it might mean someone making a choice we would not feel is correct."
Pirelli replaced Bridgestone as F1's official supplier in 2011.
