Live Commentary: Monaco Grand Prix - Webber wins from Rosberg, Alonso

Monaco GP - Webber wins from Rosberg, Alonso

Good afternoon and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of this afternoon's prestigious Monaco Grand Prix.

Michael Schumacher rolled back the years by setting the fastest time in qualifying yesterday, however, he will not start from pole because of a five-place penalty from the last race in Spain.

Red Bull's Mark Webber starts from the front with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton beginning second and third respectively.

Webber collects the first-place trophy from the Prince of Monaco, he'll certainly enjoy tonight. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for coverage, join us for the next race in Canada in two weeks!

14.54: Alonso takes up the overall world championship lead on 76 points with Red Bull duo Vettel and Webber just three points behind. Hamilton is a further ten back with Rosberg moving up to fifth on 59 points.

14.53: Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says that Webber drove "immaculately" to take victory.

Top ten points-scoring postions: 1 Webber 2 Rosberg 3 Alonso 4 Vettel 5 Hamilton 6 Massa 7 Di Resta 8 Hulkenburg 9 Raikkonen 10 Senna

14.49:History is created in Formula One as Webber becomes the sixth different winner in the opening six races of 2012. Webber doesn't sound too enthused in picking up his second Monaco victory.

MARK WEBBER WINS THE MONACO GRAND PRIX!

None of the men at the front can find a way past each other so Webber takes victory, with Rosberg and Alonso completing the podium.

Lap 78: Webber crosses the line for the final lap in Monte Carlo, the top six are still separated by around four seconds but it's so, so hard to overtake here.

Lap 77: Perez, who's stopped twice, has joined the leading train but he's been lapped and is 11th.

Lap 76: Just three laps remaining and it's again got darker in the French principality, not sure whether the heavens will open in time to have an effect on this race.

Lap 74: So the top six fighting it out in the final five laps is as follows: 1 Webber 2 Rosberg 3 Alonso 4 Vettel 5 Hamilton 6 Massa

Lap 72: JENSON BUTTON IS OUT OF THE RACE! The Englishman is thought to have picked up a puncture in colliding with Kovalainen. A woeful day ends in a lacklustre fashion for the McLaren man.

Lap 71: Vergne has taken a massive gamble on the weather on gone on to intermediate tyres. He was doing well in seventh so interesting decision from Toro Rosso.

Lap 71: Lots of rain on Alonso's on-board camera as Massa joins the procession of frontrunners. Will anyone be bold enough to make a move after the tunnel or on the home straight?

Lap 70: Webber has lost a lot of time and now the top five are all within touching distance of each other, brilliant!

Lap 68: Ten laps to go and Rosberg is closing to within a second of Webber. Toro Rosso's Ricciardo retires from the race.

Lap 66: It's definitely getting darker in Monaco and Schumacher's day ends gloomily. He retires and again fails to pick up a point, the German only has two world championship points this year.

Lap 65: Umbrellas are going up and jackets are going on. Is this rain going to be hevy enough to force a tyre change? What an end to the race we could have in prospect.

Lap 65: Schumacher's got no speed and is passed by the Force India duo on the home straight. He's got a front wing problem I think.

Lap 64: Toro Rosso's Vergne is having a great race and is up in seventh after beginning from 16th.

Lap 61: Hamilton locks up into the opening corner. The Englishman will have a flat-spot on his right-front tyre, which won't make completing the final 17 laps any easier.

Lap 58: Very little action at the moment as the frontrunners continue to race at around the same times. Webber looks good for a victory unless Rosberg or the rain can intervene.

Lap 55: Brief wave of the yellow flags as Glock loses part of his front wing at turn 14.

Lap 52: Webber's lead to Rosberg is 1.3s, at any other Grand Prix that would be a good gap for Rosberg to overtake but at Monaco overtaking is all but impossible. Some love the theatre of this race, while others may see it as a procession round the Monte Carlo streets.

Lap 49: Raikkonen's team tell him that no more rain is expected. Shame.

Lap 47: Vettel comes out just ahead of Hamilton in fifth place. Red Bull will be pleased with that, McLaren can only blame themselves for another disappointing pit performance.

Lap 46: Vettel's losing time and he comes into the pit.

Lap 44: Hamilton tells his team that he's been hit with something on the head that flew off a pit board on the home straight, very strange. No replays of this yet.

Lap 41: Hamilton doesn't think he'll be able to get his set of soft tyres from the end of the race if he continues at his current pace.

Lap 41: Perez serves his drive through as we are told that there are spits of rain falling in the pit lane. Whether it's enough to disrupt the race is another thing.

Lap 39: Button pits from eighth and puts on a set of super-softs. He'll look to go to the end of the race on these tyres if the rain stays away.

Lap 39: Perez has been given a drive-through penalty for obstructing Raikkonen with a late pit entry.

Lap 38: One lap away from half-distance, here's a top-ten update: 1 Vettel 2 Webber 3 Rosberg 4 Alonso 5 Hamilton 6 Massa 7 Ricciardo 8 Button 9 Schumacher 10 Vergne

Lap 36: Raikkonen loses a place to Hulkenburg as he looked to pass Perez who was diving into the pit lane.

Lap 35: Schumacher pits for the first time and the Mercedes boys produce a 3.2s lightning stop. Hamilton's pit stop was 4.3s and McLaren have consistently let down the Englishman with sluggish pit stops all season.

Lap 33: No sign of the rain and Vettel is now 12 seconds ahead at the front. If the rain comes soon then all the drivers will come in and it's a real advantage to the reigning two-time world champion.

Lap 31: Massa pits from the lead and Vettel, on the softer tyre remember, takes up first place.

Lap 30: Alonso pits and resumes ahead of Hamilton! Top stuff from the Ferrari boys and Hamilton is now down in fourth.

Lap 29: A procession of pit stops sees Webber pit from the lead and resume ahead of Rosberg. Hamilton also pits when Alonso was all over him.

Lap 29: Great stuff from Raikkonen and Schumacher coming out of the tunnel. The Finn is slower than Schumacher but manges to hold him off into the chicane.

Lap 28: Rosberg pits from second and changes from super-soft to soft tyres. If it rains now then the German's race could be seriously compromised. If not, it could be a dream move for the Mercedes team.

Lap 27: The frontrunners' tyres are finally going away as we wait with baited breath for some showers.

Lap 25: Into lap 25 and Webber is maintaining a two-second gap to Rosberg. No pit stops as of yet which is remarkable considering we've done 25 laps. Rosberg is told we may have light rain in four minutes!

Lap 23: Schumacher's right on the back of Raikkonen in seventh, can the German, so impressive yesterday, make it past the Finn?

Lap 21: The latest weather forecast tells us we may see some wet conditions in around 13 laps time. Never believe the weatherman though, right?

Lap 20: Alonso's definitely found something and he's taken a second out of Hamilton ahead of him.

Lap 18: Lotus Renault's Petrov has been retired because of an electric problem as Alonso goes eight tenths quicker than the leader. Has the Spaniard woken up?

Lap 17: Button is told that rain is still expected but to switch to plan B, whatever that is.

Lap 16: Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Grosjean says he got a bad start and couldn't do too much once bunched inside the pack.

Lap 14: The laps are around the 1m20s mark, which is fairly slow for Monaco. The teams appear to be saving their tyres, especially with the potential of a shower or two.

Lap 13: Raikkonen is informed that rain could come in 15 laps, now that would make it exciting!

Lap 11: Webber sets the fastest lap of the race and is now 1.4s ahead of Rosberg. Hamilton's a further second adrift.

Lap 11: As expected, the stewards take no further action on any cars that cut the first corner on lap 1.

Lap 10: Retirements in the race so far are Maldonado, Grosjean and De la Rosa. Kobayashi is in the pit and may be sent back out if Sauber feel his car is fit to race.

Lap 10: Here's a top-ten update after the opening circuits: 1 Webber 2 Rosberg 3 Hamilton 4 Alonso 5 Massa 6 Vettel 7 Raikkonen 8 Schumacher 9 Hulkenburg 10 Senna

Lap 8: The race stewards are investigating cars cutting the opening Sante Devote corner on the first lap after Grosjean's spin-out. Vettel was one of those clearly cut the right-hander but surely he was taking avoiding action?

Lap 6: Button, who's one of three men to start on the harder tyre, gets told that he is still in the race despite being down in 14th.

Lap 5: Just 5.2s separates the top eight as the drivers make their way through the narrow streets in a single-file fashion.

Lap 5: Webber's struggling to pull away from Rosberg, who's keeping the lead below a second in these early stages.

Lap 4: Massa's looking good in fifth and he's all over the back of teammate Alonso.

Lap 4: Hamilton is a little slow on the restart and Alonso almost capitalises but the British driver manages to hold off the Spaniard into Sante Devote.

Lap 3: Safety car in this lap and DRS is enabled.

Lap 2: Schumacher was the man who contacted with Grosjean, damaging his left rear suspension and causing the spin, which most drivers avoided. Schumacher is down in eighth with Button also having a bad start, he's dropped from 12th to 14th.

Lap 1: Webber holds the lead midway through the lap from Rosberg and Hamilton. Alonso is fourth from Massa with Vettel jumping from ninth to sixth. THE SAFETY CAR IS OUT as Maldonado has come to stop.

Lap 1: Drama on the home straight as Grosjean spins out before the first corner.

Lap 1: One, two, three, four, five red lights illuminate, pause, they're out and we're away at the Monaco Grand Prix!

Formation Lap: Webber sees the green light and leads them away on the formation lap of the glamourous street circuit. Can the Aussie get a good start and lead in to Sante Devote, or will Rosberg and Hamilton make a charge from behind? Moments away from lights out in Monte Carlo.

12.58: The general consensus from the drivers seemed to be a content one with a dry 35-degree track. Rain has been touted as possible this weekend but at the moment it doesn't look likely with the Azure coast awash with sunshine.

12.53: Ahead of the start, here's the top ten from qualifying: 1 Webber 2 Rosberg 3 Hamilton 4 Grosjean 5 Alonso 6 Schumacher 7 Massa 8 Raikkonen 9 Vettel 10 Hulkenburg

12.49: Scottish driver Di Resta, starting 14th, is looking for a top-ten points finish this afternoon.

12.47: Schumacher says that he was happy with yesterday's quick lap, adding that it wasn't "perfect", and is hoping to push on from sixth in the field.

12.45: Jools Holland is next to be spotted and he's alongside famous guitarist Eric Clapton, both men are hoping for a Mercedes victory.

12.42: Alonso looks cool as a cucumber chatting to film star Antonio Banderas. The actor tells Martin Brundle that he loves racing and football and that he is supporting fellow Spaniard Alonso, who he is meeting for the first time today.

12.40: Rosberg, second on the grid, tells Sky Sports F1 that the track feels grippier than he thought and he's confident. Grosjean echoes these thoughts and is hoping to continue his impressive 2012 form.

12.39: Vettel, who starts in ninth, is the joint championship leader with Alonso, who begins from fifth. Hamilton will be hoping for a good start from third.

12.35: The sixth race of the year is the one the Formula 1 drivers most want to win. If Webber wins from pole today he'll become the sixth different winner this year.
