Maldonado handed three-point penalty

Lotus driver Pastor Maldonado has been handed a three-point penalty by the FIA following an incident with the safety car during the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The 30-year-old was given a 10-second penalty for failing to stay above the minimum time for following the safety car early in the race.

The penalty means that Maldonado now has eight penalty points in a 12-month period. Any driver exceeding 12 penalty points in a 12-month period receives an automatic one-race ban.

Ferrari's Sebastien Vettel claimed his first victory for his new team at the race, leading home Mercedes pair Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
