Formula 1 2016 season kicks off with Australian Grand Prix in April

Formula 1 season for late start in 2016

The Formula 1 season will begin later than expected in 2016, kicking off with the Australian Grand Prix on April 3.

The F1 calendar usually begins in March, but the Melbourne event will run back to back with the China Grand Prix next term.

Race times will be brought forward as sunset will take place one hour earlier in Melbourne due to the April clock change.

"The new date will see an earlier start time, and fans can expect the same great on-track action and off-track entertainment across the four days," said Australian GP CEO Andrew Westacott.

The April 3 scheduling marks the latest start for the Formula 1 season since 1988.
