Southampton began the new Championship season with a 3-1 victory against Leeds United at St Mary's.

Captain Dean Hammond put the Saints ahead with a curled finish before Adam Lallana doubled their lead at the break, turning the defender in the box to place the ball into the far corner.

David Connelly put the match beyond doubt after half-time with a strike from outside of the area.

Leeds earned themselves a consolation from the penalty spot, with Max Gradel smashing the ball home.
