Cala strike wins it for Cardiff

Cardiff City have stunned Southampton 1-0 at St Mary's to give their hopes of Premier League survival a shot in the arm.

Juan Cala's second-half volley was enough to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side what could be a crucial win in the fight to avoid the drop.

Jordon Mutch wasted a good opening for the Welsh side early on when he failed to connect with the ball when swinging his foot at it inside the box nine minutes in.

Southampton fashioned a number of chances within the first half hour, and Steven Davis had a decent opening on 15 minutes before Adam Lallana, who was lively throughout, found Gaston Ramirez, who hit the bar with a deflected effort.

David Marshall and Steven Caulker were involved in a mix-up on 18 minutes but the goalkeeper eventually scrambled the ball away before saving Lallana's shot on the edge of the box.

Southampton were asking for penalty when Caulker leaned into Luke Shaw, but the referee waved away the appeals five minutes from half time.

Cala gave his side the lead on 63 minutes when he met a half-clearance with a left-footed volley on the edge of the box.

Cardiff then had Marshall to thank for keeping the lead when he denied Sam Gallagher with a great save before Morgan Schneiderlin chipped over the bar.

The goalkeeper again came to the rescue to deny Nathaniel Clyne late on, before Rickie Lambert poked wide on 87 minutes, as the Welsh side held on.
