Jack Warner: 'Shameful Sepp Blatter must step aside as FIFA president'

Warner: 'Shameful Blatter must step aside'

Former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner has urged Sepp Blatter to step aside from his position as head of the scandal-hit organisation.

The Swiss was appointed as top boss of football's world governing body for a fifth term in succession last week, despite growing calls for him to pull out of the Zurich election.

Warner, who has himself been caught up in the ongoing corruption scandal, now believes that the time is right for change.

"Why are there no investigations in Asia, or in Europe? Why are there no investigations into Sepp Blatter? No other person has brought so much shame and disgrace on FIFA," he told German magazine Stern.

Asked if he felt FIFA president Blatter was corrupt, Warner responded: "I only know this: he was elected FIFA boss five times in succession. Is he corrupt? I don't know.

"If I were his age, I'd retire and pass the presidency of FIFA on to someone younger. But everyone has different ideas of what to do with their lives."

Warner has recently distanced himself from racketeering and bribery claims that came to light during a dawn raid last Wednesday, which saw seven officials arrested.
