Newcastle fans must travel the furthest and pay the most money to support their team over Christmas and New Year.

Fans of Premier League and Football League clubs will travel more than 30,000 miles supporting their teams over the festive period.

Research by Virgin Media and the Football Supporters' Federation has shown fans will collectively clock up 31,244 miles heading to away games over Christmas and New Year and will pay an average of £117.77 in doing so.

Newcastle fans face the longest time on the road, with their fixtures at Liverpool on Boxing Day and Watford on December 29 requiring them to travel 880 miles at a cost of £282.30 each.

Fulham supporters, by contrast, will only have to travel to one away game – a 20-mile round trip to Arsenal on New Year's Day.

The longest single journey faces Grimsby fans, who must make a 606-mile round trip to see their team at Exeter in League Two on Boxing Day, while League One supporters will clock up an average of 383 miles, the most of the four leagues.

Kevin Miles, the chief executive of the FSF, said: "Travelling fans are a massive part of that tradition but their support should never be taken for granted and we'd like to see clubs and sponsors doing everything they can to ensure football is affordable for all."
