New La Liga TV deal in UK and Ireland imminent?

A new deal to show La Liga matches on television in the UK and Ireland is close to being finalised, according to the league's president Javier Tebas.

A new deal to show La Liga matches on television in the UK and Ireland is close to being finalised, according to the league's president Javier Tebas.

For most of last season the action was broadcast via Eleven Sports but when the rights came up for auction in July, no new buyer came forward.

ITV4, who aired some fixtures in the last campaign, agreed a deal to broadcast both one live game from each of this season's first three matchdays and a weekly highlights programme.

With those three games now gone, there was some uncertainty as to whether there would continue to be a UK platform for the Spanish top flight, but Tebas seemed confident of a deal being sorted by the end of the international break.

Speaking to SportsPro, the league president said: "Before the fourth matchday begins there will be news and [we] will announce where you can watch Spanish football in the UK and Ireland."

The 57-year-old also suggested that the games would be easier to access for fans with the new provider, as the matches on Eleven Sports were only available on web, tablet and phone apps.
