FIFA confirms date of presidential election

The FIFA executive committee has confirmed that the presidential election will be held on February 26, 2016 as originally planned.

The election will take place during an extraordinary FIFA Congress in Zurich, which will also vote on reforms to world football's governing body.

There is uncertainty surrounding Michel Platini's bid with he, current FIFA president Sepp Blatter and FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke serving 90-day suspensions amid allegations of corruption.

Blatter had already announced plans to resign before being banned for three months amid a FIFA ethics investigation over an alleged £1.35m payment that he made to Platini in 2011.

Prince Ali, who lost out to Blatter in the last election in May, will stand for the presidency, while Sheikh Salman al-Khalifa, the president of the Asian Football Confederation, will also reportedly stand.
