Vincent Kompany: 'Contract extensions were crucial this summer'

Vincent Kompany praises Manchester City for offering new contracts to a number of key players this summer.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has suggested that offering contract extensions to key players was just as important as signing new players this summer.

Kompany, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero and Aleksandar Kolarov all agreed new deals with the Premier League champions recently, and the defender believes that keeping the members of the squad who have achieved success was vital.

"It's one thing to make new signings, but it's another to make sure we have a core of players who know the league and have enjoyed success in the league," the Belgian is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"Then we can move forward with a certain style and philosophy that has been successful for us.

"For me it's important to see quality, new players coming, but it is as important to see players like Silva, Kolarov and Nasri remaining at the club."

Joe Hart and Edin Dzeko are both reported to be close to signing extensions of their own in the near future.
