McManaman: 'Liverpool have great chance of title'

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman tells Sports Mole that Jurgen Klopp's side have a "great chance" to end their 29-year wait for a top-flight title this season.

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has insisted that Jurgen Klopp's side have a "great chance" to end their 29-year wait for a top-flight title this season.

The Reds currently sit two points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, but the destination of the trophy remains in the champions' control due to their game in hand.

Never before in Premier League history have the top two teams amassed as many points at this stage of a campaign, and McManaman acknowledged that whoever misses out will be unfortunate to do so.

"[Liverpool] have got a great chance. Two teams have had a fantastic season and two teams will hopefully continue to have a fantastic season until the end of the season," McManaman told Sports Mole after the charity legends game against AC Milan.

"Someone is going to win and someone is going to lose, probably with maximum points, so it's going to be a really unlucky loser. But that's the great thing about the Premier League this year - we've got two teams fighting it out. This time last year it was clear-cut and one team was streets ahead of everyone else so this year has been a lot closer which is really nice."

Asked whether Liverpool have been given enough credit for going toe-to-toe with a Man City side that were 16 points clear at the same stage of 2017-18, McManaman added: "I haven't thought that they haven't had enough credit so I presume that they're getting enough credit.

"Maybe because Liverpool spent money in the summer, people won't give them as much credit, but I think the fact that they have got more points than they've ever accumulated at this stage of a season speaks volumes for themselves."

Liverpool are back in action again on Sunday when they host top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
