Liverpool team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Atalanta BC

Liverpool injury, suspension list vs. Atalanta BC

Liverpool could book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League when they welcome Atalanta BC to Anfield on Wednesday evening.

The Reds sit five points clear at the top of Group D after only three games courtesy of a 100% record so far, most recently hammering Atalanta 5-0 in Bergamo.

Jurgen Klopp's side were also comfortable winners against Leicester City at the weekend, but are contending with an injury crisis which saw them missing 10 first-team players for that match.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Liverpool's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Atalanta's visit.

Virgil van Dijk

Status: Out Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: Unknown

Among Liverpool's many high-profile absentees, Virgil van Dijk arguably still looms the largest. The Dutchman has made encouraging early progress in his recovery from knee surgery, but it will still be some time - possibly even next season - before he is available again.

Naby Keita

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Hamstring Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Naby Keita joined the crowded treatment room at Liverpool against Leicester, picking up a hamstring injury which forced him off less than 10 minutes into the second half. The problem is not thought to be serious, but the midfielder is almost certain to miss this match.

Thiago Alcantara

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Thiago Alcantara is still yet to return to full training after missing the last seven games with a knee injury sustained in the Merseyside derby. Klopp suggested that the summer signing is closing in on a return, but Wednesday's match is likely to come too soon.

Jordan Henderson

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Thigh Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Jordan Henderson was among a string of Liverpool players to pick up an injury during the international break, missing the win over Leicester as a result. Liverpool are hopeful over their captain's fitness for this one, but Klopp will be unwilling to take any risks considering the nature of his injury.

Joe Gomez

Status: Out Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: Unknown

Like Henderson, Joe Gomez was injured while away with England but his injury is much more serious and the centre-back could now miss the remainder of the season.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Knee Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is yet to feature this season after picking up a knee injury before the campaign began, but Klopp hinted last week that a return for the midfielder may not be far away.

Mohamed Salah

Status: Minor doubt Type of injury: Coronavirus Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Klopp has confirmed that Mohamed Salah has now tested negative for coronavirus, paving the way for him to play against Atalanta after missing the Leicester match at the weekend.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Status: Out Type of injury: Calf Possible return date: December 5 (vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a calf injury before the international break and may not be back until next month, potentially ruling him out of at least four games.

Rhys Williams

Status: Minor doubt Type of injury: Hip Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Liverpool's injury woes were not only confined to senior international football, with Rhys Williams picking up a hip injury while away with England Under-21s. The centre-back should be available for this match, but did not feature in the squad against Leicester.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Status: Major doubt Type of injury: Muscle Possible return date: November 25 (vs. Atalanta)

Klopp revealed that a scan uncovered an injury which Xherdan Shaqiri did not even know he had picked up during the international break. The fact that it was clearly not an issue for Shaqiri suggests that it is nothing serious, but he remains a doubt for this match.

LIVERPOOL'S SUSPENSION LIST

Liverpool have no players suspended for this Champions League contest.
