Chelsea reportedly emerge as favourites to sign young Wigan Athletic forward Joe Gelhardt in the summer.

Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign young Wigan Athletic forward Joe Gelhardt.

Despite only turning 17 in May, Gelhardt has already scored his first goal in the Championship, as well as making five substitute outings in the senior ranks.

The forward has also impressed at international level with England Under-17s, which has resulted in a number of clubs monitoring his development.

According to The Express, Chelsea are currently regarded as the frontrunners for the teenager, given that Frank Lampard has shown a willingness to give young players an opportunity at Stamford Bridge.

Everton are also said to be in the running as they look to keep Gelhardt, who has a contract with Wigan until 2021, in the North-West.
