Barcelona 'cut Depay's wages three weeks after arrival'

Barcelona reportedly cut Memphis Depay's wages just three weeks after he signed for the club, due to financial difficulties.

Barcelona have reportedly been forced to cut Memphis Depay's wages just three weeks after he signed for the club.

The Dutchman officially joined the Catalan outfit on July 1, signing a two-year deal, after his contract with French side Lyon expired.

However, according to Goal, Depay's original £6m-a-year contract had been reduce by 30% to around £4.4m per year, due to the club's financial difficulties.

Fellow new recruits Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Emerson could also see their wages cut, as club president Joan Laporta is looking to reduce the club's wage bill.

Barca are currently in deep financial trouble and have been instructed by La Liga to sell players in order to get under their current wage cap.

Laporta needs to raise at least £200m before he can consider recruiting new players or hand Lionel Messi a new deal to re-sign the Argentine legend, who is now a free agent.

If this figure is not earned in the coming months, then this will mean Depay, Aguero, Garcia and Emerson are all unable to officially play for Barcelona despite moving to Camp Nou this summer.
