Ruben Limardo Gascon wins individual epee gold

Venezuela's Ruben Limardo Gascon has won gold in the men's individual epee final, overcoming Norway's Bartosz Piasecki.

Neither of the two finalists were expected to be among the medals before the tournament began, but Limardo Gascon's narrow 6-5 victory over Seth Kelsey and Piasecki's 15-13 win over Jinsung Jung ensured that there would be a shock gold medallist.

As it turned out, it was the Venezuelan to came out on top, winning the first period 4-3 before dominating the second 8-3. Piasecki responded in the third, but his 4-3 win wasn't enough to overturn the damage that had already been done.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Jung beat USA's Kelsey in the third place bout to win bronze.
