Interview: GB's Shanice Lobb "upset" with inward dive performance

Shanice Lobb tells Sports Mole of her disappointment with a dive that cost her a medal for Team GB at the European Games.

Team GB's Shanice Lobb has admitted that she is disappointed with her performance of a dive that cost her a medal at the inaugural European Games tonight.

The 17-year-old had been on course for a silver in the women's 1m springboard event until it came to the third dive in her routine - an inward 3-1/2 somersault - which earned her a score of just 33.6 from the judges.

Although she pulled it back with a 67.2 for her final dive, Lobb ultimately missed out on a podium place to Germany's Elena Wassen by under 13 points. Gold went the way of Lobb's 15-year-old teammate Lois Toulson, who finished more than 27 points ahead of the chasing pack.

Sports Mole grabbed a word with Lobb shortly after the session to find out how she was feeling.

You came fourth, just missing out on that podium spot. How are you doing?

"Not great, to be honest with you. I'm a bit upset because I know I can do the inward dive a lot better than I did. In training it's been going really well, but unluckily today it didn't go to plan. Hopefully I'll just learn from my mistake and do it better next time."

So what actually went wrong with your inward 3-1/2? Did you just lose focus?

"I didn't lose focus, I did what I normally do on each dive and go through the drills, but I think it's just one of those things. I came out too early on it and landed short."

You still came fourth at the first European Games though. That's pretty special.

"I'm not happy that I came fourth [instead of getting a medal], but fourth is still great at the European Games. I know that I have improvements to make and my score can be even higher, so that's a positive to take from it."

You must be really pleased for Lois as well.

"Yeah, she dived amazingly. I'm so happy for her - it's unbelievable."

How are you enjoying the whole Baku experience in general? The Athletes' Village sounds like a wonderland.

"It basically is! When we first came, we were running around everywhere looking at everything! There's the salon, the nail bar... the food hall is massive, there's so much to choose from. It's unbelievable!"

You've done your job now - what will you be doing over the next few days?

"I'm probably just going to support the team, cheer everyone on and maybe do some training so I don't lose all my strength."
