Geraint Thomas optimistic ahead of road race at Commonwealth Games

Thomas confident ahead of road race

Geraint Thomas has admitted that he will head into the road race full of confidence after claiming a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday.

The Welsh rider secured third spot as England's Alex Dowsett took the gold medal in the time trial, and Thomas is hopeful of continuing his good form on the final day of the Games on Sunday.

"I think anything's possible," the 28-year-old told reporters. "Myself and Luke [Rowe] have got good legs, and hopefully I can keep freshening up a bit and hopefully feel strong on Sunday.

"But it's a super strong field and every nation has good riders and with the road race as well a lot of tactics come into play.

"A lot can happen but we're confident. Just like the last month [on the Tour de France] I'll just get on with it, smash it and see what happens."

Thomas's Team Sky and Welsh teammate Rowe finished 17th in the time trial.
