Voeckler wins stage 16 of Tour de France

Thomas Voeckler claimed victory from stage 16 of the Tour de France this afternoon, while Bradley Wiggins maintained his hold on the yellow jersey.

Voeckler, along with fellow Frenchman Brice Feillu, broke away from the pack as the final summit approached.

The 33-year-old then moved clear of his compatriot to take the stage by a considerable winning margin.

Meanwhile, Team Sky's Wiggins, who finished just over seven minutes behind Voeckler, has retained a lead of two minutes and five seconds over teammate Chris Froome in the overall standings.

Italian Vincenzo Nibali, who appears to be Wiggins's only genuine contender for the top prize, is a further 18 seconds behind.
