Four Sri Lankan cyclists cautioned by police

Four members of Sri Lanka's Commonwealth Games team earn a telling-off by local police after being caught cycling on a motorway.

Four members of Sri Lanka's team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games were stopped by police this afternoon after being caught cycling on the M74.

The quartet had to be informed by Scottish police that they were breaking the law after being spotted gliding down the busy stretch of road at the Motherwell and Hamilton exit.

The incident occurred close to Strathclyde Park, where the triathlon events will be held on Thursday and Sunday. Police Scotland said of the incident: "The cyclists were advised to get off the road."

Coincidentally, Olympic champion and England triathlete Alistair Brownlee caught the foursome in action and tweeted: "The Sri Lankan cycling team cruising down the M74, lovely spot for a bike ride."

The Games' opening ceremony is scheduled to kick off tonight at 8pm.
