Callum Skinner: 'Scottish system is unusual to me'

Team Scotland cyclist Callum Skinner admits that the Scottish system is unusual to him, having spent most of his time with Team GB.

Team Scotland cyclist Callum Skinner has revealed that he has had to adjust to the Scottish system for the Commonwealth Games.

Skinner spends the vast majority of his time training with Team GB, but this summer in Glasgow he will go up against many of his British teammates, with the home nations all competing separately.

As a result, many of his usual coaches are also now on opposing teams, and Skinner acknowledged that there were differences that he needed to get used to for the Games.

"I'd say this is quite an interesting one for me because I'm generally far more comfortable in the GB setup. I usually train full-time with them, so coming into the Scottish system is almost like getting a new coach," Skinner told Sports Mole.

"You have to get used to the way that people work with you. The GB system, once you've been in there for a year you sit down and everything is about you and your bike, whereas the Scottish system - in essence the same goals are still there but you need to be more proactive and tell them what you want, and that is something that I've really had to try to get used to.

"Working with the coaches, I've got my own coaches working for the Welsh, Scottish coaches with us and then the GB head coach working with the English so it is really about trying to get everyone on the same page to get the best position for myself. It is a bit of a balancing act but we've got a plan for this afternoon and we're sticking to it regardless."

Skinner will take part in the team sprint later this afternoon having been eliminated from the individual event in the opening session of action.
