Cavendish loses Tour of Britain lead

Mark Cavendish has lost his overall lead in the Tour of Britain in the fifth stage of the race.

The Team Sky rider struggled through the Staffordshire moors and came in almost 12 minutes behind Holland's Marc de Maar in first.

Cavendish's teammate Bradley Wiggins was faring better throughout, but performed a tactical U-turn when Wiggins fell behind to support his comrade.

Australia's Leigh Howard holds the race leader's gold jersey after coming in 15 seconds behind De Maar.

The result sees Cavendish fall out of contention for the overall classification title, with the best-placed British rider now Endura's Jon Tiernan-Locke in sixth.
