Lizzie Armitstead, Alex Dowsett win World Championship medals in Virginia

Lizzie Armitstead wins a silver medal at the Road Cycling World Championships in Virginia, while Alex Dowsett bags bronze.

British duo Lizzie Armitstead and Alex Dowsett have secured medals at the Road Cycling World Championships in Virginia.

Armitstead's Boels-Dolmans team finished six seconds behind Germany's Velocio-Sram to secure silver in the women's event with their time of 47:35.72.

Dowsett and his Movistar teammates took bronze in the men's race after coming third, while BMC Racing claimed gold for a second year running with their time of 42:07.97.

Commonwealth champion Dowsett will take part in the men's individual time trial on Wednesday, while Armitstead will head up the British women's road race squad on the Saturday.
