Cadel Evans calls time on career

Former Tour de France winner Cadel Evans retires from cycling after finishing fifth in the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Australian cyclist Cadel Evans has retired after competing in the inaugural Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

The 37-year-old, who won the Tour de France in 2011 and the 2009 world road title, finished fifth in the race named in his honour.

"When I have a chance to reflect on things, I will probably have a chance to get emotional about it," Evans told SBS.

"But it's all happened so quickly today - I'm trying to digest everything."

Etixx Quick Step's Belgian rider Gianni Meersman won the 174km race, ahead of Australian duo Simon Clarke and Nathan Haas.
