Ireland's Jack Wilson crashes out of road race

Irish cyclist Jack Wilson crashes in the road race at the European Games.

Irish cyclist Jack Wilson has suffered a rib injury after crashing in the road race at the European Games.

He hit a barrier in the opening lap to halt his hopes of success.

"It was very unlucky. They (the peloton) was very close to the barriers. They had to squeeze a little and Jack hit one of the barriers, which was on the ground next to him. I don't know exactly what happened," team manager Brian Nugent told reporters.

"He's been taken to the hospital. It is something to do with his ribs. But he should be back later. We don't exactly know what's wrong. It is just unlucky."

Wilson recently finished in 103rd at the Tour of Britain.
