England's Sophie Thornhill sets new world record

Team England cyclist Sophie Thornhill has set a new world record on the first day of competition at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The 22-year-old - a Paralympic gold medallist and double Commonwealths gold medallist - finished in a time of 10.609 seconds in the B&VI sprint qualifying, beating Aussie cyclist Jessica Gallagher's previous record of 11.045 seconds.

Ironically, Gallagher had bested her own record by finishing in a time of 10.954 seconds just moments before Thornhill took her turn.

Both Gallagher and Thornhill will now face off for the gold medal in this evening's final.

Thornhill will then go on and attempt to defend her title in the B&VI 1,000m time trial.
