Jess Varnish "looking forward" to Commonwealth Games semi-finals

England's Jess Varnish says that she is "really looking forward" to facing Olympic champion Anna Meares in the women's sprint semi-finals.

Jess Varnish, England's sole remaining representative in the women's sprint, has stated that she is "really looking forward" to facing Anna Meares in the semi-finals of the event.

The 23-year-old, who qualified third fastest in the morning session, will face the current Olympic champion after defeating teammate Vicky Williamson in the last eight.

"I'm really happy to make the semi-finals at it is a really big achievement for me," Varnish told reporters. "I'm really looking forward to getting out there now and racing against Meares in the next one. We qualified quite close so it should be a close race, hopefully."

Asked how she felt about taking on fellow Team England cyclist Williamson, she added: "We are always going to come up against each other. Nobody likes racing against a teammate but at the end of the day I made the semi-finals and I am really, really happy with that."

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, Danni Khan was beaten by Australia's Stephanie Morton.
