New Zealand Cricket reacts to the news that batsman Jesse Ryder is fighting for his life following an attack in Christchurch.

New Zealand Cricket has pledged its support to Jesse Ryder and his family after the player was left fighting for his life following an attack outside a bar in Christchurch.

The 28-year-old is thought to have sustained a fractured skull and punctured lung after four men set upon him in what has been described as an "unprovoked" assault.

"We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse. New Zealand Cricket's thoughts are with him and his family," said New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White.

A post on the governing body's Twitter feed reads: "The whole NZC team's thoughts are with DijaRyder this morning."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has also weighed in on the incident, offering his thoughts to Ryder and his family.

"Devastating news regarding Jesse Ryder... Just hope he can pull through... Thoughts are with him and his family," he said.

Ryder, who has played 18 Tests and 39 one-day internationals for his country, recently signed a lucrative contract for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.
