Germany's fast finish secures them gold ahead of Belarus and Russia

Germany have won gold in the men's canoe double 1,000m.

The pair of Peter Kretschmer and Kurt Kuschela had been second for the majority of the race but they finished rapidly to secure the gold medal ahead of Belarus and Russia.

Azerbaijan had made the fastest start to the race and they held a half a second's advantage from Germany at the 250m mark.

They extended that lead at the halfway mark, but Germany began to claw their way back with 250m of the race remaining.

Germany looked strong and they powered to the gold medal, with Belarus and Russia claiming silver and bronze respectively while edging Azerbaijan out of the medals.
