Boston Red Sox tie World Series

Boston Red Sox tie the World Series at 2-2 by beating St Louis Cardinals 4-2 in game four at Busch Stadium.

Boston Red Sox have beaten St Louis Cardinals 4-2 at Busch Park to tie the World Series at 2-2 and ensure a game six at Fenway Park.

The match was level at 1-1 after Matt Carpenter and David Ortiz had crossed the plate in the third and fifth innings respectively.

However, the tide turned at the top of the sixth when a home run from Jonny Gomes - in for Shane Victorino (back injury) - allowed Dustin Pedroia and Ortiz to cross the plate and open up a 4-1 lead.

Shane Robinson clawed one back in the seventh innings, but John Lackey and Koji Uehara pitched out the eighth and ninth without the loss of another run.

Daniel Descalso, Carpenter and Kolten Wong were the last men to go for the Cardinals, who must regroup for their final home game of the best-of-seven series tomorrow morning (BST).

Game six will take place in Boston on Thursday morning, and game seven will follow the next day should it be needed.
