Greg Rutherford: 'It's been a bad day, I wasn't good enough'

Greg Rutherford says that it's been a "bad day" following his failure to reach the men's long jump final at the World Championships in Moscow.

Olympic British long jump champion Greg Rutherford has admitted that he was not "good enough" to reach the final of the World Athletics Championships in Moscow.

The 26-year-old fell short of a place in the men's final by recording a best attempt of 7.87m when he needed a leap of 8.10m to qualify.

"I broke all the rules in rehab to come back from a ruptured hamstring and I felt really confident," BBC Sport quotes Rutherford as saying. "I got up this morning and thought this is going to be a good day.

"It's amazing how different a year can be. I knew after the final jump that it was not long enough. From my point of view it's been a bad day. Sadly I felt better than I was. It wasn't good enough."

Rutherford's failure comes following his gold medal win in last summer's London Olympic Games.
