Jessica Ennis is in gold position after four events of the heptathlon at the World Championships.

Britain's Jessica Ennis has taken the lead after four rounds of the heptathlon at the World Championships in South Korea.

The defending champion finished second in the 100m hurdles behind American Hyleas Fountain before leaping 1.86m in the high jump.

After two events the 25-year-old trailed Fountain by 41 points but a personal-best 14.67m in the shot put saw Ennis take the lead with four events remaining.

Ennis went on to win her 200m race, clocking a time of 23.28 to establish herself as the overnight leader.

"It was a shaky start," said Ennis. "I hit too many hurdles and the high jump wasn't great.

"But I was so pleased with the shot put and the time in the 200m."

Should Ennis take gold in Daegu, she will become the first British athlete to retain a world title.
